Monday, October 20, 2003 RI Red Cross responds to three weekend
incidents
The American Red Cross of Rhode Island responded to three incidents this weekend. On Sunday,
volunteers were called to 737 Cranston Street in Providence. An 8-unit building sustained damage due to fire and three families were in need of
assistance. The RI Red Cross provided food and shelter to 6 adults and 3 children who were displaced by the fire.
The Cranston Street incident capped an active weekend for Red Cross volunteers.
On Saturday evening, volunteers responded to a fire at a one family home at 189 Waterman Street in Providence. The family present was not in need of Red Cross
assistance. Later that same evening, the RI Red Cross emergency response vehicle responded to the carbon monoxide leak at Levy Rink in Burrillville. Disaster
assistance was not needed, but volunteers remained on scene to assist with relief efforts.
The Red Cross of Rhode Island typically spends $1,000 per family of four that it assists. All Red Cross assistance is free,
thanks to contributions from individuals and organizations. The Red Cross is not a government agency and relies on private donations to provide emergency assistance to Rhode Islanders in crisis.
