Monday, October 7, 2002 Red Cross Assists Three at Providence
Apartment Fire -- One Unit Evacuated Sunday Afternoon on Elmwood Ave.
American Red Cross of Rhode Island disaster volunteers were called to the scene of a Sunday
afternoon fire at 656 Elmwood Avenue in Providence.
One apartment in the twelve-unit dwelling was affected. The Red Cross provided
two adults and one child with meals and hotel accommodations last night. The family is expected to meet with Red Cross caseworkers today to determine long term needs.
In 2001, the American Red Cross of Rhode Island assisted 379 Rhode Island families,
who were victims of fires --- including over 150 children under the age of five.
The Red Cross typically spends $1,000 per family of four it assists. All Red Cross
assistance is free. The Red Cross is not a government agency and relies on private donations to provide emergency assistance to Rhode Islanders in crisis.
To make a donation, call 401.831.7700 or visit www.riredcross.org today.
