Thursday, August 14, 2003 Woonsocket Housing Authority to host
Live Shelter Operation -- Red Cross trained volunteers to simulate disaster scenario
A group of trained volunteers from the Woonsocket Housing Authority will host a live shelter operation
tomorrow morning at 9:30 am at Crepeau Manor, 100 Front Street, Woonsocket. This group of volunteers, who received many hours of training from the Rhode Island Red Cross, will be
engaged in actual shelter operations, as if a local disaster had occurred.
Residents of the Woonsocket Senior Center will also participate in the simulation,
acting as clients of the shelter. This group of clients will be taken through the process from start to finish and will receive all services provided at the
shelter—from meals to assessment of health needs, etc. This drill allows the volunteer team to put their many hours of training into action. They are practicing
these skills so that the City of Woonsocket is prepared should an actual disaster affect them and require the opening of a shelter. In addition, the simulation allows
the team to assess their shelter facilities and communications with local emergency responders.
The Red Cross of Rhode Island is dedicated to helping people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.
All Red Cross assistance is free, thanks to contributions from individuals and organizations. The Red Cross is not a government
agency and relies on private donations to provide emergency assistance to Rhode Islanders in crisis.
