Monday, July 29, 2002 Two Local Youth Service Groups Holding Red
Cross Car Wash ... Proceeds to Benefit Local Fire Victims
Following a string of major house fires this month, two local youth organizations are teaming up to raise
money for the American Red Cross of Rhode Island Fire Victims Fund.
The car wash will be held at behind the Red Cross Headquarters, 105 Gano Street, in Providence, this Wednesday, July 31st from 9:30am – 2pm. Suggested donation
is $4.00.
The morning shift will be covered by the Spirit Educational program. Started 18
years ago, it is a R.I. Youth Guidance program, funded through the R.I. Children's Crusade, consisting of middle and some high school students from Providence, Pawtucket and Central Falls.
In the afternoon, a group of young men from the Whitmarsh House will take over.
The Whitmarsh House is a home for mistreated youths. The residents engage in community projects to better themselves.
American Red Cross of Rhode Island disaster volunteers have responded to 17 fires
in July, assisting over 100 Rhode Islanders with emergency services. Two weeks ago, over fifty East Providence residents were assisted when a fire tore through the East Gate apartment complex.
"We are absolutely thrilled to have these two wonderful youth organizations helping
us raise money for the American Red Cross of Rhode Island," Rear Admiral Barbara E. McGann, Executive Director, American Red Cross of Rhode Island, said. "We hope
everyone will stop by, get a car wash --- and maybe even sign up to volunteer with the Rhode Island Red Cross!"
