Monday, July 14, 2003 American Red Cross of Rhode Island
responds to three weekend fires in Providence
Rhode Island Red Cross volunteers were busy over the weekend, responding to 3 separate fires in
Providence. A total of 13 people required the services of the RI Red Cross volunteers.
On Saturday evening, volunteers were called to 226 Olney Street where 6 adults
were in need of assistance. Several hours later, the RI Red Cross responded to a fire at 10 Hawthorne Street, where one adult was provided with shelter. On
Sunday evening, 4 adults and 2 children were burned out of their home and provided with food and shelter.
The Red Cross of Rhode Island typically spends $1,000 per family of four that it assists. All Red Cross assistance is free,
thanks to contributions from individuals and organizations. The Red Cross is not a government agency and relies on private donations to provide emergency assistance to Rhode Islanders in crisis.
