Wednesday, July 10, 2002 Red Cross Assists in Fires in Johnston and
Newport Eight Rhode Islanders Receiving Assistance
American Red Cross of Rhode Island volunteers were called to the scene of an evening fire in Johnston
yesterday at 10 Greenville Ave. One family --- two adults and four children --- were evacuated from their home.
The American Red Cross is providing the family with meals, clothing and hotel
accommodations. They will be meeting with Red Cross caseworkers today.
A second fire occurred early this morning at Rolling Green Apartments in Newport.
Two adults were evacuated from their residence, located at 195 Admiral Kalfdus.
The American Red Cross is providing clothing and groceries for the victims, who are staying with neighbors nearby.
These two fires mark the 79th and 80th fires, respectively, that the Red Cross has responded to this year.
In 2001, the American Red Cross of Rhode Island assisted 379 Rhode Island families,
who were victims of fires, spending over $200,000.00 in emergency services.
The Red Cross typically spends $1,000 per family of four it assists. All Red Cross
assistance is free. The Red Cross is not a government agency and relies on private donations to provide emergency assistance to Rhode Islanders in crisis.
