Monday, June 17, 2002 Red Cross Responds to Five Fires Over the
Weekend; Seventeen Rhode Islanders Receiving Assistance
American Red Cross of Rhode Island disaster volunteers had a busy weekend --- responding to
four fires in the Ocean State. A total of seventeen people --- six families ---are receiving Red Cross assistance. The nine adults and eight children will meet with a Red Cross
caseworker today at the Red Cross Gano Street headquarters to determine what additional services may be needed. The fires are as follows:
Friday, June 14th
77 Evans Street, Newport
- One family (two adults and three children) received hotel lodging
458 Wickenden Street, Providence
- Two families (two adults) received hotel lodging, restaurant and clothing
250 Hillside Ave, Newport
- One family (one Adult, four children) received hotel lodging, meals and clothing
Sunday, June 16th
36 Highland Ave, Apt B, Coventry
- One family (two adults and one child) received meals and hotel lodging
225 Mile Road, Coventry
- One family (two adults) stayed with friends and received groceries
The American Red Cross has responded to 74 fires in 2002.
In 2001, the American Red Cross of Rhode Island assisted 379 Rhode Island families,
who were victims of fires, spending over $200,000.00 in emergency services.
The Red Cross typically spends $1,000 per family of four it assists. All Red Cross
assistance is free. The Red Cross is not a government agency and relies on private donations to provide emergency assistance to Rhode Islanders in crisis.
