Governor Carcieri to Accept Red Cross Humanitarian Award For His Service Following The Station Nightclub Fire

Following the tragic events of The Station nightclub fire, Governor Don Carcieri worked closely with the American Red Cross of Rhode Island, setting up the Family Service Center at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick. Together with hundreds of Red Cross volunteers, they ensured round-the-clock care for the families of those affected by the fire.

Next Friday, June 13, 2003, the Governor will join the Red Cross again.

This time it will be to accept the agency's Humanitarian Award. He is one of four Rhode Islanders being recognized for outstanding service to the people of the Ocean State. The Governor is being honored for his compassion and leadership following The Station nightclub fire.

Past Humanitarian Award winners include: US Senators Jack Reed, Lincoln Chafee, John Chafee and Claiborne Pell, Governor Bruce Sundlun, Honorable Florence K. Murray and former Warwick Mayor Joseph W. Walsh, Esq.

The award will be presented at "Sail for the Challenge: the Red Cross Gala," at the stunning OceanCliff in Newport. Nearly 400 people will be attending the fundraiser, which will help the Red Cross respond to the more than 1,000 Rhode Islanders this year who require emergency services such as food, clothing and shelter following a house fire or other emergency. The Red Cross also provides emergency communication between local military deployed to Iraq and their families here in Rhode Island.

The event features an exclusive "Parade of Sail," where, from high atop the OceanCliff lawns, guests will watch a parade of classic yachts sail through the East Passage of Narragansett Bay. The evening will also include an auction and dancing to the sounds of Ronnie Rose.

Additional Red Cross award recipients include: Gene Valicenti, of WJAR, NBC-10, Mary Tefft "Happy" White, of Barrington, and Noreen Drexel and Ruth Corcoran, both of Newport. Corporate sponsors of the "Red Cross Gala" include Textron, Brown, Rudnick, Berlack, Israels LLP, Rhode Island Automobile Dealers Association and The Happy White Foundation.

Some tickets are still available for the Red Cross Gala. Visit www.riredcross.org or call Karen at the Red Cross at 401.831.7700 x112 today for more information or to reserve tickets.
