RED CROSS VOLUNTEERS TO CONTRIBUTE TO AIRPORT HOMELAND SECURITY DRILL

(Warwick, RI – June 1, 2005) Tomorrow, Thursday, June 2, 2005, over 60 volunteers from the American Red Cross Rhode Island Chapter will participate in APEX 2005 in coordination with the Rhode Island Airport Corporation and the Rhode Island Homeland Security Exercise & Evaluation Program.

The goal of the event is to involve multiple law enforcement departments and other organizations such as the Red Cross in an effort to validate emergency response plans and protocols.  Red Cross volunteers will staff hydration stations and serve as both "responders" and "players" at T.F. Green Airport and nearby sites.

"This exercise presents a unique opportunity for the Red Cross and our volunteers to contribute to the enhancement of disaster response here in Rhode Island," says Disaster Services Director Nick Logothets.

The majority of Red Cross volunteers will support the Family Assistance Center Operations activities, playing the role of either victims or family members seeking information about their loved ones in an airline disaster scenario.

For more information on this and other volunteer opportunities, contact Angie Moncada, Director of Communications and Special Events, at 401-831-7700 ext. 101 or log on to www.riredcross.org.

The American Red Cross is chartered by Congress to provide disaster services. We are not a government agency and we do not receive government funding or funding from our national office. We rely solely on contributions from Rhode Islanders to fulfill our mission and your dollar stays here in RI to help your friends and neighbors in their greatest time of need.
