Monday, April 29, 2002 Four Fires Keep Red Cross Volunteers Busy All
Weekend; Seven Families Receiving Assistance; Still at Hospital With Today's Victims
The American Red Cross of Rhode Island has responded to four fires since Friday, providing
assistance to 16 individuals. The victims of today's early morning fire at 15 Vanausdale St. in Providence are still at the hospital and Red Cross volunteers have been available to the family
and will provide services as the family requires them.
The following are the fires the Red Cross responded to:
Friday, April 26, 2002 40 Pembroke Ave. Providence Two families --- 5 adults and 3 Children were assisted with meals and emergency lodging.
Saturday, April 27, 2002 3 Barnes Street, Smithfield Three adults received groceries and clothing from the Red Cross.
Sunday, April 28,2002 26 Ringgold Street, Providence A total of two families were assisted. Two adults and two children received lodging,
meals and clothing, while a third adult stayed with friends and received groceries from the Red Cross. One adult and a cat were lost in the blaze.
Monday, April 29, 2002 15 Vanausdale St., Providence One family --- two adults and eight children were evacuated and have met with
Red Cross volunteers. They are currently at the hospital with children being treated as a result of the fire. Red Cross volunteers will continue to meet with the family and provide services as needed.
Including these four incidents, the Red Cross of Rhode Island has provided assistance at 53 fires in 2002.
In 2001, the American Red Cross of Rhode Island assisted 379 Rhode Island families,
who were victims of fires, spending over $200,000.00 in emergency services. The Red Cross typically spends $1,000 per family of four it assists. All Red Cross
assistance is free. The Red Cross is not a government agency and relies on private donations to provide emergency assistance to Rhode Islanders in crisis.
