Monday, April 26, 2004 RI schools raise funds and show support for RI
Red Cross
On Wednesday, March 31st, students across Rhode Island celebrated the last day of Red Cross Month
with a school wide campaign called "Students Stand Up for the Red Cross Day." Dozens of schools across Rhode Island took part and raised funds for the RI
Red Cross programs and services. In total, 34 schools participated in this statewide event which, to date, has raised over $4,700.

Schools, from elementary through college, were very creative in how they took part
on this day. Some held a flower sale, others donated extra to attend a school dance, while some donated $1 for the privilege of wearing a hat to school. Others
simply put out collection jugs for students and teachers to drop spare change into. In all, it was a huge success and students and teachers across Rhode Island
showed the positive impact they can have when we work together to help our friends and neighbors in crisis.
This first-ever fundraiser was a bigger success than anticipated. "Students and
teachers across RI really took hold of this project and raised almost $5,000 for Rhode Islanders who have lost everything in a fire," stated Robin Erickson, Director
of Communications for the RI Red Cross. "We are just overwhelmed with their generosity and support".
Each dollar is crucial since the RI Red Cross typically spends $1,000 per family of
four that it assists. All RI Red Cross assistance is free, thanks to contributions from individuals and organizations. The RI Red Cross is not a government
agency and relies on private donations to provide emergency assistance to Rhode Islanders in crisis. The organization provided emergency assistance to over 1,500 people last year.
