Wednesday, April 24, 2002 Red Cross Responds to Late Night Fire in Central
Falls -- Two Families Receive Assistance
Red Cross disaster volunteers were called to the scene of a fire last night at 154 Earl Street in Central Falls.
This is the fourth fire in two days in which the Rhode Island Red Cross has provided assistance.
Two families --- a total of four adults --- were given emergency lodging at a hotel
and meals by the team of Red Cross volunteers at the scene.
Since Monday evening, the Red Cross has responded to four fires, assisting a total of 26 people with emergency services.
This is the 49th fire the Red Cross has responded to in 2002.
In 2001, the American Red Cross of Rhode Island assisted 379 Rhode Island families,
who were victims of fires, spending over $200,000.00 in emergency services.
The Red Cross typically spends $1,000 per family of four it assists. All Red Cross
assistance is free. The Red Cross is not a government agency and relies on private donations to provide emergency assistance to Rhode Islanders in crisis.
