Monday, April 7, 2003 Busy Weekend for Red Cross --
Thirty Providence Residents Receive Emergency Aid
American Red Cross of Rhode Island disaster volunteers kept busy this weekend, responding to three major fires in Providence.
On Saturday afternoon, volunteers were called to back-to-back fires at 173 Linwood Ave. and 20 Peach Street in Providence.
Three families were displaced from the Linwood Ave. triple-decker. The Red Cross
provided 14 people --- eight adults and six children with groceries. All stayed with family members.
At Peach Street, twelve people --- three families --- were displaced. One family
stayed with family members. The Red Cross provided hotel accommodations and meals to the remaining eight residents.
On Sunday, Red Cross volunteers were dispatched to 20 Dorchester Ave., also in
Providence. Three families --- a total of 11 people --- received assistance. Two families received hotel accommodations and food, with one adult also receiving
clothing. The third family received groceries and stayed with family members.
These fires mark the 76, 77, and 78th emergencies, respectively, that the Red
Cross has responded to in 2003. So far this year, over 500 Rhode Islanders have received disaster services --- free of charge --- from the American Red Cross of Rhode Island.
