Turning Fashion into Fundraising for the Red Cross -- Salve Regina Students Raise $500 Selling "Gently Used" Formal Wear Saturday in Newport

Students from Salve Regina College in Newport turning fashion into fundraising this Saturday, April 5, 2003 to help the American Red Cross of Rhode Island's East Bay Branch.

Students Candice Harris and Christina Vanesse collected nearly 100 "gently used" prom dresses, cocktail attire --- even a wedding dress --- and re-sold them on the Salve Regina campus this past Saturday, April 5th.

"The girls came up with this concept themselves," Deborah Miller, Manager of the East Bay Branch of the Red Cross, said. "They wanted to do something to help the Red Cross and they have been collecting some beautiful things to sell from their fellow students."

Harris, a finance major, and Vanesse, a nursing student, are both in their junior year. They have also roped some underclasswomen into the act. Several freshmen, who must complete a community service project, helped staff the collection site for the dresses.

"Between house fires, weather emergencies and our continued support of local troops being deployed overseas, our resources have really been tapped this winter," Miller said. "We invite everyone to come on Saturday, do some shopping, and help raise some money for the Red Cross!"
