Red Cross Responds to Morning Fire on Smith Street -- Volunteers Currently Responding to East Bay Blaze

American Red Cross of Rhode Island disaster volunteers were called to the scene of a morning fire at 602 Smith Street in Providence.

Two families were affected by the fire. The first floor of the structure houses a day-care center, which was not affected by the blaze.

Residents of the second floor are able to stay in their apartment. However, the third floor residents --- seven people --- were evacuated. The Red Cross is providing the family --- four adults and three children --- with hotel accommodations and meals.

Currently, Red Cross volunteers are on the scene of a second fire this afternoon on the East Bay.
