Monday, February 23, 2004 RI Red Cross assisting families displaced
by two weekend fires
On Sunday afternoon, RI Red Cross volunteers were called to the scene of a single family house fire at 18
Old Warwick Avenue in Warwick. The family consisted of 4 adults and 3 children and required emergency food, clothing and shelter from the RI
Red Cross. Ironically, volunteers were at a special service honoring first responders to The Station Fire when they were called to the scene of this fire.
On Saturday afternoon, volunteers responded a fire at an apartment complex at
375 Sunset Avenue in North Providence. The unit consisted of 12 apartments and 11 were occupied. Some opted to stay with family and 5 adults required food and shelter assistance from the RI Red Cross.
The Red Cross of Rhode Island typically spends $1,000 per family of four that it assists. All Red Cross assistance is free,
thanks to contributions from individuals and organizations. The Red Cross is not a government agency and relies on private donations to provide emergency assistance to Rhode Islanders in crisis.
