Thursday, January 9, 2003 Red Cross Responds to Late Night Fire --
One Family Assisted with Meals and Lodging
Local American Red Cross disaster volunteers responded to their fourth fire this week, late
Wednesday night at 225 Montgomery Street on the Providence/Cranston line.
One family --- two adults and two children --- were evacuated from the home. The
Red Cross provided emergency lodging at a hotel and meals for the family.
A teddy bear was also provided to comfort the child.
Since Sunday, the American Red Cross has assisted nearly 50 Rhode Islanders, who
have been displaced by fires in Providence, Central Falls and Pawtucket.
In 2002, the Red Cross provided over 1,100 Rhode Islanders with emergency
services, including food, clothing and shelter. All Red Cross disaster assistance is free. The Red Cross is not a government agency and depends on local, private donations to fund its work.
