Red Cross Assists With Fires While Providing Flood Relief

While the American Red Cross Rhode Island Chapter volunteers work day and night to help our community recover from the devastating floods of last week, they continue to assist victims of home fires rebuild their lives. Although this combination of disasters has challenged local Red Cross resources, the Chapter has been able to provide necessary services to those in need.  
 

Since the beginning of this year, the Rhode Island Chapter has assisted 262 individuals whose homes have been damaged or destroyed by fire; local volunteers have responded to 11 fires since the flooding began on March 15, providing temporary shelter and financial assistance to replace clothing, shoes, and food.  They also provide CVS gift cards to assist families replace personal hygiene items. rrals to community partners of the Red Cross who can assist in their long-term recovery. Red Cross mental health and health service workers follow up with the families.

 
Operation Bear Hugs is a special program sponsored by the local Chapter. Children whose homes have been damaged by fire receive a teddy bear donated through the Red Cross by a member of the community.
 
The Rhode Island Chapter is gratified by the generosity of the community in making donations to help their neighbors recover from this unprecedented flooding. They also encourage contributions to the fund which enables the volunteers to assist fire victims every day of the year.
