Providence Journal employee, Lorna Gomes, decided she wanted to give back to her community by volunteering with the Red Cross Rhode Island Chapter. She has been assigned to a Disaster Assessment Team which is going house to house in affected neighborhoods to determine the extent of damage to individual homes.

When asked why she decided to give her time to this project, Gomes said, “So often you see disasters in places far away, and you wish there was a way to help. When disaster struck close to home last week, as a native Rhode Islander, I decided this was the time to help. I view this as my first step into volunteerism.”

Damage assessment is an important function of the American Red Cross. Careful evaluation of the damage sustained by individual residences helps to ensure that every dollar donated to the Red Cross

is used effectively to enable victims of disaster to recover as soon as possible.

There are many other Red Cross activities in which members of the community can become involved as volunteers in order to assist their neighbors. To find out more about volunteer opportunities, click here
