American Red Cross volunteers from New York and Virginia arrived in Providence late last night to provide relief to exhausted Rhode Island volunteers who had been managing the Westerly shelter since early this week.
The team will make sure the shelter residents are safe and comfortable until they are able to return to their homes. These four are the latest of dozens of Red Cross workers to arrive in Rhode Island from all over the United States. They have given up spending the Easter holiday with their families in order to help members of our community recover from this unprecedented disaster.
Jason Campagnone, Health Education and Community Development Manager at the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Red Cross says, “The dedication shown by volunteers has been outstanding. An operation of this magnitude could never have been successful without them. We are very grateful and fortunate to have these selfless indi
viduals who are willing to give up their holiday weekends in order to help the members of our community.”
Local and national Red Cross volunteers are working hand in hand to meet the immediate post-disaster needs of the citizens of Rhode Island. It has been particularly helpful to the Red Cross Rhode Island Chapter for these national workers to arrive, as 67% of the local volunteers have themselves been affected by this disaster.
