“Tragic events sometimes bring out the very best in people,” said Bruce Rutter, CEO of the local Red Cross chapter. “They put aside their day-to-day concerns, and do something for people who are truly suffering.”
Deborah Ashe, Director of Donor Development at the Chapter said, “We’ve been getting calls from all over the state—families, clubs, churches, employee groups, small business—they all want to help. It’s amazing to see this outpouring of spirit—people really care for their brothers and sisters in Haiti.” Some examples of ways people are raising money for Haiti relief are:
· A nine year old girl in West Warwick turned her birthday party this weekend into a fundraiser for Haiti relief and raised over $340
· Tommy’s Pizza is donating $1 for every pizza sold today at its Providence and Cranston stores
· Hot 106 will host “Hip Hop for Haiti” featuring local artists at Jerky’s on January 26
· Employees at the Attorney General General’s office and at Washington Trust branches around the state are each holding dress-down-day fundraisers
· Pane e Vino in Providence will donate all wine and beverage sales on February 4
· URI students will host a fundraiser with six bands at Easton’s Point in Middletown on February 4.
· Summit Commons Nursing Center will collect from staff and residents this week
· A host of bars, restaurants and coffee shops are collecting money from patrons, including McKinley’s Pub in East Greenwich, the 99 Restaurant in Westerly and Coffee Exchange in Providence
· Local Haitian-American DJ’s are hosting an event at Marley’s Lounge on Thayer Street in Providence on February 13.
· Three little girls in Cranston did chores around the house this past weekend and earned $10, which they donated to Haiti relief
The Red Cross expects its relief and recovery efforts, ramping up now in Haiti, to go on for many months, and therefore to cost far more than the $100 million raised to date. Donations can be made online at www.redcross.org, by texting the message “Haiti” to 90999 or by phone to 1-800-REDCROSS. Donors can also call the local Red Cross here in Rhode Island and make a donation by phone at 401-831-7700, or send a check to our office at 105 Gano Street, Providence RI 02906. Please indicate “Haiti” on the check. |
